Last checked 6 October 2026: every pattern link, level, yarn and hook.
These are 13 free fall (autumn) crochet patterns from independent designers: four pumpkin decorations (one is a stacked centerpiece), a pumpkin pillow, a pumpkin treat bag and bowl for Halloween, two cardigans, a mushroom hat, an acorn garland and two blankets. The easiest is rated very easy, the hardest intermediate to advanced. Most use worsted yarn on a 4–5.5 mm (G–I) hook. All are free to read; one asks for your email first.
For each pattern you get the designer's level, yarn, hook and finished size, a link to the free pattern, and the closest yarn from our shop by thickness and colour. The Fall Harvest pumpkins use super bulky yarn and the patchwork cardigan uses bulky; everything else is DK or worsted.

Free crochet pumpkin patterns and Halloween treats
Pumpkin patterns make up the biggest group in this guide. These six show how much the yarn changes the result, from a super bulky pumpkin to a small DK one and a cotton treat bag.
Fall Harvest Crochet Pumpkins
Free pattern by Jen Hayes Creations

Three pumpkins worked in rows of bobble and camel stitches, then assembled. They are about 10, 16.5 and 20 cm (4, 6.5 and 8 in) tall, including the stem.

Our yarn match: Alize Velluto, a super bulky polyester chenille with 68 m per 100 g, made for an 8–10 mm hook. It gives a soft, velvet-look pumpkin; expect the bobble texture to show less than in a smooth yarn. At 68 m per ball, buy one for the small pumpkin and two each for the medium and large: the medium needs 64 m, which leaves almost no margin in a different yarn. If you would rather see every stitch, Alize Superlana Maxi (bulky, 100 m per 100 g) is thinner than the designer's yarn, so your pumpkins will come out noticeably smaller.
Bobble Crochet Pumpkin Pillow
Free pattern by The Knotted Nest

A square pumpkin pillow for an 18 in (46 cm) insert. The techniques include bobbles worked from a chart, herringbone half double crochet and reverse single crochet.

Our yarn match: YarnArt Finland, 100% acrylic with 200 m per 100 g, made for a 5 mm hook, the same size as the pattern. For the designer's 503 m of ivory and 91 m of orange, you need 3 balls of Oat and 1 of Brick; one ball of Forest covers the green. Any brown scrap will do for the stem.
Little Rustic Pumpkin
Free pattern by Yarn + Chai

A small pumpkin with ribs that look knitted: you work half double crochet into the third loop. A piece of cinnamon stick makes the stem.
Open the free pattern →Free on the page; an ad-free version comes with the site's All-Access Pass
Our yarn match: Alize Superlana Klasik, an acrylic-wool blend (75/25) with 280 m per 100 g. One ball holds more than three pumpkins' worth, so a ball of Terra and one of Saffron make a whole pumpkin patch.
Crochet Plaid Pumpkin
Free pattern by Crochet 365 Knit Too

A plaid rectangle in half double crochet, with the unused colours carried along, then seamed and gathered into a pumpkin.
Open the free pattern →Free on the page; an ad-free version is sold
Our yarn match: YarnArt Jeans Plus, a cotton-acrylic blend with 160 m per 100 g. Brick, Snow and Wheat give a brighter orange, white and gold take on the designer's brick, ivory and terracotta plaid. One ball of each is plenty.
Treat Me Pumpkin Crochet Bag
Free pattern by Nana's Crafty Home

A drawstring pumpkin bag for treats in an open, slanted half double crochet stitch, with a curly vine on the cord and an optional wrist strap.
Open the free pattern →Free on the page; a paid PDF is also sold
Our yarn match: YarnArt Jeans Plus, a cotton blend of similar thickness to the designer's cotton. For the designer's 219 m of orange you need 2 balls of Brick, plus 1 of Pine for the vine and cord.
Crochet Pumpkin Treat Bowl
Free pattern by One Social Girl

A lidded pumpkin bowl worked in rounds of single crochet, with a stem and leaf on the lid. The designer made it as a secret candy stash. The pattern is for personal use only.

Our yarn match: YarnArt Jeans Plus in Brick, Dark Brown and Pine, close to the designer's orange, brown and green.
Cardigans and a hat to wear this fall
Patchwork Party Cardi
Free pattern by Make & Do Crew

A cardigan made from strips of extended half double crochet, seamed together for a patchwork look and finished with ribbing in a second yarn.

Our yarn match: we don't stock a direct match for Scarfie. The nearest in fibre and colour effect is YarnArt Cloud, a lofty acrylic-wool blend (75/25) in 100 g balls of 230 m whose colours shift along the strand, which suits the patchwork look. It is thinner than the designer's yarn (about 190 m per 100 g), so crochet a swatch and change hook until you reach her gauge before you start. By the designer's metres, the body takes about 4 balls for XS and up to 8 for 4/5X; round up for each shade. For the ribbing, 2–3 balls of YarnArt Finland (200 m each) replace her medium yarn.
Cozy Granny Square Cardigan
Free pattern by HayHay Crochet

A granny square cardigan the designer calls the "Grateful + Thankful Cardi". You join the squares with mattress stitch and finish with single crochet ribbing and buttonholes. The fit is boxy, slightly oversized and cropped.

Our yarn match: YarnArt Finland, 100% acrylic with 200 m per 100 g, made for a 5 mm hook like the pattern. Finland also comes in 100 g balls, so use the designer's skein counts as your starting point. She does not give metres per skein, so check your first square against her measurement before you buy the rest. For a warmer cardigan with wool in it, Alize Lanagold Classic (49% wool, 240 m per 100 g) is thinner, so the first square matters even more.
Amanita Mushroom Hat
Free pattern by Briana K Designs

A toadstool-style hat in fair isle colourwork and split single crochet, worked from charts. The designer's sample is rust, brown and green with white.
Open the free pattern →Free once you enter your email; a paid PDF is sold on Etsy and Ravelry
Our yarn match: Alize Superlana Klasik, 280 m per 100 g, in Terra, Brown, Olive and Light Cream to follow the designer's colours. Even the largest size needs only 256 m in total, so one ball of each colour is enough. It is an acrylic-wool blend rather than merino and may be thinner than the designer's yarn, so crochet a gauge swatch before you start.
Autumn home decor
Crochet Acorn Garland
Free pattern by Handy Little Me

Stuffed acorns worked in continuous rounds of single crochet, with a cap and stem, then strung into a garland as long as you like. Each acorn takes only 10–20 g of yarn, so this is a good use for leftovers.

Our yarn match: Alize Superlana Klasik, made for a 3–4 mm hook, so it suits the pattern's hooks. At 10–20 g per acorn, one 100 g ball makes five to ten acorns. Terra, Saffron and Light Cream for the nuts, Brown for the caps.
Fall Crochet Centerpiece
Free pattern by Winding Road Crochet

Three crochet pumpkins stacked into a table centerpiece. Each pumpkin starts as a rectangle of half double crochet worked in the back loops, then is gathered. The leaves in the designer's photos are bought faux floral picks, not crochet.

Our yarn match: YarnArt Jeans Plus in Brick, Snow and Wheat, the closest match to the designer's orange, cream and gold: 2 balls of Brick for her 176 m of orange and 1 each of Snow and Wheat. Any brown scrap works for the stem. It is a cotton-acrylic blend, not the acrylic she used.
Blankets for cooler evenings
Green Gingham Blanket
Free pattern by Daisy Farm Crafts

A gingham blanket in griddle stitch, carrying the colours, with a slip-stitch border. The designer used two greens and a pale grey.
Open the free pattern →Free on the page, with a printable version
Our yarn match: YarnArt Finland, 100% acrylic like the original, made for a 5 mm hook. Its in-stock green, Forest, is brighter than the designer's dark green; pair it with Grey as the middle tone and Bone as the light tone. At 200 m per ball, the designer's amounts come to 3 Forest, 3 Grey and 2 Bone.
Autumn Rhapsody Blanket
Free pattern by Nana's Crafty Home

A stitch sampler throw in ten autumn colours that you can resize from lap to king. It runs through stitches such as lemon peel, sunflower, falling leaves, popcorn and spike stitch, and finishes with a bobble shell border. The whole pattern is on one page.
Open the free pattern →Free on the page; a paid PDF is also sold
Our yarn match: YarnArt Jeans Plus, a cotton-acrylic blend with 160 m per 100 g, made for a 5 mm hook. Rounding up each of the designer's ten colour amounts gives 16 balls. Four colours need 141–155 m, just under one 160 m ball, so if you crochet loosely, buy a second ball of those four. Pick ten shades, for example:
How to swap the designer's yarn for one you can buy
You do not need the designer's brand. You need the same thickness and the same gauge.
Choosing yarn for another project? See Best Yarn for Crochet by Project, With the Right Hook.
- Find the weight on the pattern. Look for a number or a name: DK (3), worsted or aran (4), bulky (5), super bulky (6).
- Compare metres per 100 g. Within the same kind of yarn, fewer metres per 100 g means a thicker yarn. Airy, lofty yarns such as YarnArt Cloud look thicker than their metres suggest, so always swatch. The chart below compares every yarn named in this guide.
- Swatch to the designer's gauge. If your swatch is too big, go down a hook size; if it is too small, go up. For decor that must hold its shape, such as pumpkins and bowls, designers often use a smaller hook than the standard guide ranges. The Little Rustic Pumpkin uses DK on a 3.5 mm hook, while the Craft Yarn Council's guide range for DK is 4.5–5.5 mm. That firmer fabric is deliberate, so keep it.
- Work out how many balls you need. Multiply the designer's yards by 0.9144 to get metres. Divide by the metres in one ball, then round up for each colour, not just for the total.
US and UK terms: if a pattern is written in US terms and you learned UK terms, US single crochet (sc) is UK double crochet (dc), US half double crochet (hdc) is UK half treble (htr) and US double crochet (dc) is UK treble (tr). The stitch is the same; only the name moves up one step.

Frequently asked questions
What should I crochet for fall?
Start with a pumpkin: seven of the 13 patterns here are pumpkins or pumpkin-shaped. Beyond that, think of a treat bag or bowl for Halloween, a cardigan or hat for cooler days, an acorn garland or table centerpiece, and a blanket for long evenings. All 13 patterns above are free.
What is the easiest fall crochet pattern for a beginner?
In this guide, the Fall Crochet Centerpiece (the designer calls it "very easy"), the Treat Me pumpkin bag ("easy, beginner-friendly") and the Little Rustic Pumpkin ("easy"). All three use a 3.5–5 mm (E–H) hook.
Are these crochet patterns really free?
Yes. Twelve are free to read in full on the designer's page. The Amanita Mushroom Hat is free once you enter your email address. Several designers also sell an ad-free PDF; buying one is optional.
What yarn and hook do I need for a crochet pumpkin?
Any weight works; it mainly changes the size. In this guide the Little Rustic Pumpkin uses DK on a 3.5 mm (E) hook, the Plaid Pumpkin and the Treat Bowl use worsted on 4–5 mm (G–H) hooks, and the Fall Harvest Pumpkins use super bulky yarn on an 8 mm (L) hook. Choose a smooth yarn for crisp ribs and chenille for a soft, velvety pumpkin.
How much yarn does a small crochet pumpkin take?
About 73 m (80 yd) of DK yarn for a 7.5 cm (3 in) pumpkin such as the Little Rustic Pumpkin. One 100 g ball of Alize Superlana Klasik (280 m) is enough for three.
Can I use a different yarn from the one in the pattern?
Yes, if you match the thickness and the gauge. Compare metres per 100 g, crochet a swatch, and change hook size until your swatch matches the designer's. Expect a different feel if you change fibre, for example cotton instead of acrylic.
