FAQ

Here are some answers that might help.
If you cannot find what you're looking for, ask us directly

What is lace weight yarn used for?

Lace weight yarn (Craft Yarn Council weight 0) is used for openwork shawls, stoles, airy sweaters and doilies, and as a second strand that adds halo to a thicker yarn. It is the finest standard weight, so a small ball goes a long way: Alize Lanagold 800 gives 800 m per 100 g. The lace range at VILRITA covers kid mohair-silk, merino-silk and wool-acrylic blends.

What needle size should I use for lace weight yarn?

The Craft Yarn Council lists 1.5–2.25 mm needles for lace weight, but lace patterns usually call for larger needles, often 3–4 mm, to open up the holes and give drape. Ball bands reflect that: Alize Kid Royal 50 suggests 2–6 mm and Gazzal Exclusive 3.25–5 mm. Swatch and block before you trust your gauge, because lace fabric opens up and grows when wet-blocked.

Can I hold mohair lace yarn together with another yarn?

Yes, holding a strand of mohair-silk with another yarn is one of the most common ways to use lace weight. It adds a soft halo and warmth with very little extra weight; fingering plus a mohair strand usually knits up around DK gauge. DROPS Kid-Silk (75% mohair, 25% silk) and Alize Kid Royal 50 (62% kid mohair, 38% polyamide) are typical carry-along yarns. Swatch both strands together to find your needle size.

    Is mohair yarn itchy?

Kid mohair is generally soft, because it comes from the first shearings of young Angora goats and is finer than adult mohair. Sensitivity varies, so if wool tends to bother you, hold a swatch against your neck before committing to a sweater. Silk and merino blends feel smoother: Gazzal Exclusive is 60% superwash merino, 30% mulberry silk and 10% super kid mohair, and DROPS Kid-Silk pairs mohair with 25% silk.

Is lace weight yarn hard for beginners?

Lace weight is manageable for a confident beginner, but it is less forgiving than thicker yarn: the stitches are tiny and fuzzy mohair is hard to unpick. Start with a non-fuzzy yarn such as Alize Lanagold 800 (51% acrylic, 49% wool), a pattern with a short, easy-to-read repeat, and a lifeline, a thread run through a finished row, so a mistake only costs you a few rows.

How much lace weight yarn do I need for a shawl?

Go by the metres in your pattern, not the grams, because lace yarns differ hugely in length per ball. 25 g of DROPS Kid-Silk is 210 m, 25 g of Gazzal Exclusive is 200 m, and 100 g of Alize Lanagold 800 is 800 m. Divide the pattern's total length by the metres per ball, round up, and buy all balls from the same dye lot.

    0: Lace

Lace weight yarn is as fine as knitting yarn gets and is usually worked on larger needles than the strand alone would suggest, for openwork shawls, stoles and airy layers that drape like a spider's web.

For a warm winter shawl, Alize Lanagold 800 is acrylic with nearly half wool. Alize Kid Royal 50, kid mohair with polyamide, is finer still at 500 m (547 yd) per 50 g and knits up into a fuzzy, see-through stole, while Gazzal Navarra, a fine acrylic and polyester yarn, suits light garments.

Wool and mohair lace often looks crumpled until it is blocked: soak the finished piece, pin it out to size on a towel or blocking mat and let it dry, and the openwork opens up.
